Brake track wagon coverts 3 normal tracks into 1 brake track. Brake tracks created by this wagon can slow down the train speed by 20% while the engine is crossing it. Note that this is not the same as the slow down track in the custom map mode which can actively and permanently reduce the speed of the train.

Since the resource conversion rate is 3 to 1, this wagon is very resource inefficient. In terms of speed reduction: say the train speed is x seconds per meter; placing 3 normal tracks down would give you 3x seconds, whereas converting them and then place one brake track down it would only give you 1.2x seconds. In order words, looping is much more efficient for buying your team time.

However, when the train speed is incredibly fast and the track placer is having problems keeping up, and your team has a lot of resources/normal tracks to spare, then using this wagon could be beneficial. You can also craft and store some brake tracks while the train is slow, and then use this stash when the train gets fast.

Notes

Due to how the Brake track slowdown formula works, and because it takes 3 regular tracks to craft a Brake track, it is most optimal to save brake tracks until the train is going at least 1.0m/s before using any. Before this speed it is more efficient to use regular tracks.
