Handbook description

The cart offers a target flag that can be placed anywhere on the map where the cannon will shoot to when loaded with items afterwards.

Strategy

Placing tracks using the cannon wagon (old)
Changing direction when the cannon wagon is placing tracks (old)

The cannon wagon carries a small target flag that players can pick up. The cannon wagon can shoot anything the player can hold, including tools and animals, towards the target. If the wagon is loaded while a player or Carriage Wagon is holding the target, it will not fire. If a dynamite is loaded, the fuse time will not start until it lands.

The cannon wagon can fire the whole input stack at once, unless it is in track building mode.

Auto track placing

When holding the flag and near the end of the track, the player is able to lay down as many "virtual" blueprint tracks as they would like, just as they would normal track pieces. If the Cannon is then loaded with track pieces and the flag is sitting on the ground, the cannon will fire one track piece at a time to fill in the blueprint tracks. If the cannon has no track blueprint to fill in, then it will launch tracks to the flag location just like any other items.

Keep in mind, the Flag cannot be placed back onto the Cannon wagon if there is anything in the wagon's input slot, readying to launch. However, if your train has a Carriage Wagon, you can place the flag on the Carriage instead. This can prevent unwanted launching of track or other items, such as when using the front-pull extension to automatically load the Cannon.

(Pre-Update #4, outdated info) If a track is loaded into the wagon, and the target is placed on top of the last track, the cannon will enter track placing mode. In this mode, tracks are fired one at a time in the direction the track is facing and the target will also be moving with it. Note that the cannon wagon isn't smart enough to route the path in any way. If the forward path is blocked, loaded tracks will be dropped next to the last track. You can change the direction the track is going by placing a track manually in the desired direction. Because the tracks are fired at a constant rate, and that it does not turn intelligently, auto track placing using the cannon wagon is not recommended for multiple players, or high speed, or on medium and above levels.
